This timeline documents the major milestones that have shaped AMSG’s journey – from its founding decisions and Member State ratifications to strategic roundtables, global engagements, flagship initiatives and institutional leadership.
SECTION I
Establishment: The Birth of a Continental Institution
AMSG was established in Riyadh on 9 January 2024 through a series of foundational decisions that created the Organization, designated its pioneer leadership and established its initial institutional architecture.
09 January 2024 — Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
African Governments Establish the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG)
African governments formally established the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) on the sidelines of the Third Future Minerals Forum 2024 in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, creating a continental platform for strategic minerals cooperation, Africa-led mineral development and long-term resource sovereignty.

Nigeria Selected as Pioneer Chair of AMSG
Member States selected the Federal Republic of Nigeria as Pioneer Chair of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, providing early political leadership and strategic guidance during the Organization’s foundational phase.
09 January 2024 — Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Uganda Designated as Interim Host of the AMSG Secretariat
Member States designated the Republic of Uganda as Interim Host of the AMSG Secretariat, establishing the Organization’s initial institutional base for coordination, administration and operationalization.
09 January 2024 — Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
H.E. Moses Micheal Engadu Appointed Founding Secretary-General
Member States appointed H.E. Moses Micheal Engadu from the Republic of Uganda as the Founding Secretary-General of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group to lead the operationalization of the Organization and coordinate its early institutional development and continental engagements.
11 January 2024 — Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Becomes AMSG Founding Partner
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia became a Founding Partner of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, supporting Africa’s vision for strategic minerals cooperation, investment, industrialization and long-term partnership under the Future Minerals Forum framework.
05 February 2024 — Cape Town, South Africa
Ministerial Resolution Ratification
African Ministers responsible for minerals and mining signed the Resolution establishing the Africa Minerals Strategy Group during the Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa. The Resolution entered into force upon signature by two-thirds of the founding Member Nations, marking the formal operational commencement of the Organization.
SECTION II
Membership & Ratification: Building Africa’s Collective Minerals Voice
AMSG rapidly expanded its continental legitimacy through Charter signings, ratifications and presidential endorsements, strengthening Africa’s collective institutional framework for strategic minerals cooperation.
05 February 2024 — Cape Town, South Africa
South Sudan, Somalia and Sierra Leone Sign the AMSG Charter
The Republic of South Sudan, the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of Sierra Leone became among the first Member States to sign the AMSG Establishment Charter during the official signing ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa.
23 April 2024 — Lilongwe, Malawi
President of Malawi Endorses AMSG
H.E. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, endorsed the vision and objectives of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group and gave his blessings for Malawi to sign and ratify the AMSG Establishment Charter.
24 April 2024 — Lilongwe, Malawi
Republic of Malawi Ratifies the AMSG Establishment Charter
The Republic of Malawi became the first Member State to ratify the AMSG Establishment Charter, marking a major milestone toward the operationalization of the Organization.
17 July 2024 — Abuja, Nigeria
President of Nigeria Endorses AMSG
H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, endorsed the vision and strategic direction of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group and gave his blessings for Nigeria to sign and ratify the AMSG Establishment Charter.
03 August 2024 — N’Djamena, Chad
Republic of Chad Ratifies the AMSG Establishment Charter
The Republic of Chad ratified the AMSG Establishment Charter, reinforcing continental momentum toward institutional operationalization and strategic minerals cooperation.
17 July 2025 — Abuja, Nigeria
Federal Republic of Nigeria Signs the AMSG Charter
The Federal Republic of Nigeria formally signed the AMSG Establishment Charter, reaffirming its leadership role within the Organization and commitment to Africa’s strategic minerals agenda.
09 September 2025 — Nouakchott, Mauritania
Islamic Republic of Mauritania Signs the AMSG Charter
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania signed the AMSG Establishment Charter, expanding the Organization’s continental reach and strengthening strategic engagement across North and West Africa.
22 September 2025 — New York, United States of America
President of Uganda Endorses AMSG and Uganda’s Hosting of the Secretariat
H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, represented by H.E. Jessica Alupo, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, reaffirmed Uganda’s support for the Africa Minerals Strategy Group and Uganda’s role as proud host of the AMSG Secretariat during the Second AMSG High-Level Roundtable held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
17 October 2025 — Juba, South Sudan
Republic of South Sudan Ratifies the AMSG Establishment Charter
The Republic of South Sudan ratified the AMSG Establishment Charter, marking another major milestone toward the continued expansion and institutional consolidation of the Organization.
25 March 2026 — Banjul, The Gambia
National Assembly of The Gambia Approves Ratification of the AMSG Charter
The National Assembly of The Gambia approved the ratification of the AMSG Establishment Charter, advancing the country’s formal accession process into the Organization.
29 March 2026 — Monrovia, Liberia
Cabinet of Liberia Approves Ratification of the AMSG Charter
The Cabinet of the Republic of Liberia approved the ratification of the AMSG Establishment Charter, representing another important step toward continental institutional consolidation.
28 April 2026 — Nairobi, Kenya
President of Kenya Endorses AMSG
H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, endorsed the vision, objectives and strategic direction of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group during high-level engagements surrounding Kenya’s participation in the Organization.

Ministerial & CEO Roundtables: Forging Africa’s Strategic Minerals Consensus
AMSG established itself as a leading convener of ministerial and executive dialogue on Africa’s strategic minerals future through high-level roundtables bringing together governments, industry leaders, investors and development partners.

AMSG convened high-level Ministers, policymakers, investors and industry leaders during AFNIS 2024 to advance continental dialogue on strategic minerals development, value addition, industrialization and Africa-led resource governance.

AMSG Convenes the FMF 2025 Africa Leadership Roundtable
AMSG convened African Ministers, global investors and strategic partners during the Future Minerals Forum 2025 to strengthen Africa’s collective voice within the future global minerals economy.

AMSG Convenes the AFNIS 2025 Ministerial & CEO Roundtable
AMSG convened Ministers, CEOs, development partners and investors at AFNIS 2025 under the theme “From Talk to Strategy: Africa’s Mineral Future Starts Here,” advancing practical dialogue on beneficiation, investment and industrial transformation.

AMSG Opens Inaugural Ministerial Forum at African Mining Week
AMSG officially opened the inaugural Ministerial Forum at African Mining Week, positioning the Organization at the centre of continental dialogue on strategic minerals cooperation, responsible sourcing and industrial development.

AMSG Convenes the African Mining Week 2025 Ministerial & CEO Roundtable
AMSG convened Ministers, CEOs, investors and policymakers at African Mining Week 2025 to advance unified commitments on exploration, beneficiation, finance, digital sovereignty and mineral tokenization.
14 January 2026 — Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
AMSG and World Bank Group Lead High-Level Outcomes at the FMF 2026 Africa Leadership Roundtable
AMSG and the World Bank Group convened high-level African Ministers, institutions and strategic stakeholders during the FMF 2026 Africa Leadership Roundtable to strengthen Africa’s positioning within the global strategic minerals transition.

AMSG Convenes the Kenya MICE 2026 Ministerial & CEO Roundtable
AMSG convened Ministers, investors, policymakers and industry leaders during the Kenya Mining Investment Conference & Expo (MICE) 2026 to deepen strategic cooperation, investment dialogue and Africa-led mineral value chain development.

AMSG convened African leaders, Ministers, development institutions and strategic partners during the 79th United Nations General Assembly to position Africa’s resources at the centre of the future global economy.

AMSG Convenes Second High-Level Roundtable on Critical Minerals Development in Africa during the 80th United Nations General Assembly
AMSG convened Heads of State, Ministers, investors and global institutions during the 80th United Nations General Assembly to advance strategic dialogue on Africa’s critical minerals development, industrialization and global partnerships.

AMSG launched strategic continental platforms and initiatives designed to advance responsible sourcing, digital mineral governance, Pan-African cooperation and Africa-led development frameworks.

Launch of the Africa Responsible Mineral Sourcing Initiative (ARMSI)
AMSG launched the Africa Responsible Mineral Sourcing Initiative (ARMSI) to strengthen responsible sourcing, transparency, traceability and ethical governance across Africa’s mineral supply chains.

Launch of the Madini Protocol and Africa Mineral Token
AMSG launched the Madini Protocol and Africa Mineral Token to advance digital mineral governance, traceability, tokenization and Africa-led innovation across strategic mineral value chains.

Global Launch of the Africans for Africa Movement
AMSG globally launched the Africans for Africa Movement during engagements held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, advancing a new vision for Pan-African unity, diaspora engagement and transformative development partnerships.
24 November 2025 — Marrakech, Morocco
AMSG and the Kingdom of Morocco Sign MoU on the African ESG Framework
AMSG and the Kingdom of Morocco signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding on the African ESG Framework, advancing African-led standards and cooperation on responsible minerals governance and sustainable development.

Institutionalization & Leadership: Operationalizing the Organization
AMSG entered a new phase of institutional maturity through the operationalization of its permanent governance architecture and election of its substantive leadership.

AMSG Holds Its First General Assembly
AMSG convened its First General Assembly on the sidelines of the Fifth Future Minerals Forum in Riyadh, formally operationalizing the Organization’s permanent governance and leadership architecture.

Federal Republic of Nigeria Elected First Chairperson of AMSG
Member States elected the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the first substantive Chairperson of the General Assembly of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group.

Democratic Republic of Congo Elected First Vice Chairperson of AMSG
The Democratic Republic of Congo was elected as the first substantive Vice Chairperson of the General Assembly of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group.
