On 24th January 2025, H.E. Moses Micheal Engadu, the Secretary-General of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG), had the honor of attending the official launch of the Abyssinia Iron & Steel Plant, which was graciously officiated by H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda. The event, which marked a significant milestone in Uganda’s industrial growth and mineral value addition, was a key moment in the development of East Africa’s steel manufacturing industry.

At the invitation of Hon. Can. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, the Secretary-General was accompanied by Mr. Patrick Mulindwa, AMSG Chief of Staff. This occasion highlighted Uganda’s growing commitment to industrialization, specifically in the value-added processing of the country’s mineral resources.

Abyssinia Group of Industries (AGI), the proud owner of the Iron & Steel Plant, is a leading steel manufacturer in East Africa, headquartered in Kenya. With a strong operational presence across the region, AGI operates six advanced steel plants in Kenya, two in Ethiopia, and mining operations in Uganda. This strategic regional presence ensures a steady supply of billets for AGI’s extensive steel production, which includes high-quality products such as hot-rolled steel, cold-formed steel, wire products, and welding rods.

This new plant is set to play a vital role in East Africa’s industrial and construction sectors, providing essential steel products to meet the growing regional demand. It also underscores the importance of mineral value addition, a key priority for AMSG as we continue to advocate for the sustainable development of Africa’s mineral resources.
