The Secretary-General of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group His Excellency Moses Micheal Engadu met His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 17th July 2024 at State House, Abuja, Nigeria.

His Excellency Moses Micheal Engadu briefed President Tinubu about the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG), its mandate, goal and initiatives. He requested the support of the Government of Nigeria towards the AMSG’s activities and for the ratification of the Charter.

His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria welcomed the Secretary-General and Delegation. He welcomed the Africa Minerals Strategy Group and committed Nigeria’s unwavering support as founding Chairperson of the Group.

President Tinubu emphasised the need to defend Africa against illegal exploiters of its mineral resources.

We will lead the continent to self-realisation on the value of our minerals and economic ingenuity, freeing it from undue exploitation and abuse,” said President Tinubu

During the meeting, Honourable Dr. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Nigeria and Chairperson of the AMSG Ministerial Steering Committee explained that the AMSG was formed to counter the “divide and rule tactics” that he historically weakened African countries’ negotiating power in the global market. He stressed the necessity for African nations to unite and leverage the global energy transition opportunities.

The world needs critical minerals for energy transition and green energy, and these metals are largely found in Africa. We must speak with one voice to prevent continued exploitation, said Hon. Alake.

He further stressed that uniform policies across African countries would prevent investors from exploiting individual nations by pitting them against each other. “If we all adopt local value-addition policies and present a united front, investors will have to comply with our terms,” he added.

The Africa Minerals Strategy Group aims to synthesise ideas and create a common policy direction to ensure that African nations can fully benefit from their natural assets without falling victim to divide-and-rule tactics.
